Did you know that the iconic Metro Goldwyn Mayer lion was not originally named Leo? The first lion, Slats (1924–1928), was born at Dublin Zoo, Ireland on March 20, 1919, and was originally named Cairbre (Gaelic for “charioteer”).

Slats appeared in all black-and-white MGM films between 1924 and 1928, with the first being He Who Gets Slapped (1924). Unlike his roaring successors, Slats did not roar—he simply looked around—because this was the pre-sound era.
